Flash! Ah-Ah
Who doesn’t love cheese? I had a fun surprise last night. I forgot that I had set my DVR to record Flash Gordon and as I got home last night and was looking for something to watch, low and behold, there was Flash.
I recorded the movie as a bit of a nostalgic tribute to my father. I remember watching it as a kid with my father. I remember the crazy colors of blood, Brian Blessed as Voltan, and most importantly the music of Queen. You cannot watch this film without singing in your best falsetto “Flash, Ah-ah. Savior of the Universe.)
This includes my son, who last night learned to sing, “Phash, Ah-ah.” And so, the generations will continue to remember this campy hero.

Without question, the soundtrack was ahead of it’s time. Getting Queen to do the WHOLE THING was a stroke of genius that turned a so-so C-Grade film in to an absolute classic. “Go Flash, Go!”.
A hero so deeply seated in the American psyche that he used a football manouvre to beat Ming in the end. What a man-fro. What a costume. What a bad guy. What in the hell was that chick not wearing? Ahh 1970’s film…
…What a film…

–The soundtrack also makes for a great driving music. When I was in high school my best friend made a mixed tape of various “get a way” music. The most important part was the bits of the Flash Gordon soundtrack disperesed throughout. This included soundbites of “Buckle your seatbelts.” and “Go, Flash, Go!”
Now, if we only had had something to “get a way” from.
