The Essential 80s Album take one

Posted on February 15, 2008. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Pete put out the challenge so here it is.

Here are ten songs that should be on an eighties album.  The criteria for these songs was this question:  “If I were a D.J. and had to purchase one eighties album to throw in the mix, what songs would either get the crowd to sing, dance, or say ‘this is our song’?”

These are not necessarily my favorites and I limited myself to only one song per band or singer.

1. Love Shack by B-52s

2. Should I stay or Should I go by The Clash

3. Come On Eileen by Dexby’s Midnight Runners

4. In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel

5. One Night in Bancock by Murray Head

6. Don’t You Want Me by Human League

7. 99 Loft Ballons by Nena

8. Every Breath You Take by The Police

9. Tainted Love – Soft Cell

10. *groan* Y.M.C.A. by the Village People

Wow! I’ve never heard the Murray Head song and I’m surprised by YMCA (!!) but agree it’s a definitive song that’s stood the test of time. B-52s and Gabriel – can’t go past them, awesome artists who almost created their own genre.

Great list, my friend and I’ll post a link back to you in a few days.

You’ve set a high standard here, mate… now not only do I need to seriously sit this one down and think it through with my lovely wife, but I MUST prepare and provide my list so that we can cover off a few areas missed… like a lot of the BritPop generation that seems to be sadly lacking.

Although I’m 30, I’m a real 70’s fan. Made loads of “that’s Gold” cd’s (ssshhhh downloaded of course)I’d be interested to know what your top ten 70’s songs are.

My top 10 70’s songs. Hmmmm…..

1. Ramble On- Led Zepplin
2. All of My Love- Led Zepplin
3. Boxer- Simon and Garfunkel
4. Beast of Burden- Rolling Stones
5. Under Pressure- Queen & David Bowie
6. Whole Lotta Love- Led Zepplin
7. Immigrant Song- Led Zepplin
8. Message In a Bottle- Police
9. Behind Blue Eyes- The Who
10. Rock Lobster- B 52s

Those quickly come to mind. I probably could have just done a top ten Zepplin list and been safe.
